Introduction
Since 1960, Chandrapur district was considered as an independent district. Till the year 1874 there were three tehsils namely Mul, Warora and Bramhpuri in the district. Then in the year 1874 Godavari district of Madras state was abolished and four tehsils were added to Chandrapur district. And the headquarters of the tehsil was kept at Sironcha. In the year 1905, a new tehsil was created with headquarters at Gadchiroli. In the year 1907, a part of the zamindari of Chandrapur district was transferred to the newly created Durg district. In the same year, the three divisions of Lower Sironcha Tehsil namely Kerala, Avalak and Pugur covered an area of about 1560 sq.km. The share was transferred to the annexed Madras State. As a result of state reorganization in the year 1956, this district, formerly in Madhya Pradesh, was merged with Bombay State. In the same year Rajura Tehsil of Adilabad District of Hyderabad State was annexed to Nanded District. Then it was excluded from Nanded district and added to Chandrapur district in 1959. After the formation of Maharashtra state in 1960, Chandrapur district was counted as a district of Maharashtra state. At this time there were six talukas in the district, the district was second in size in India and first in Maharashtra. From 1st May 1981 all Panchayat Committees in the district were given the status of Tehsil. Accordingly, a total of eight taluks were included in the district instead of six. Later, for administrative convenience, the district was bifurcated on 16 August 1982 and eight new taluks namely Gadchiroli, Dhanora, Armori, Kurkheda, Chamorshi, Sironcha, Aheri and Etapalli were included in the newly created Gadchiroli district. As a result, ten talukas namely Chandrapur, Bhadravati, Varora, Chimur, Nagbhid, Bramhpuri, Sindewahi, Mul, Gondpipari and Rajuy were included in Chandrapur district. From August 15, 1993, the two taluks of Mul and Rajura were re-divided to form the two taluks of Ballarpur and Pombhurna respectively. Also since 02nd July, 2002 Rajura and Korpana talukas were divided to form Jivati taluka thus total fifteen talukas are functioning in Chandrapur district.
