The Central Government amended the 73rd Constitution to make the Gram Panchayats self-reliant and to give them the power to run their affairs as autonomous institutions. Due to this, the Gram Panchayats have got constitutional status. In this way, the journey of the Gram Panchayats has started towards providing social justice to the people of the villages and their economic development. For the overall development of the country, various schemes are being implemented by the Central Government.
In order to ensure that the benefits of the development schemes reach the people at the very bottom and their upliftment/progress, the power was decentralised and the Zilla Parishad Committees and Gram Panchayats were given powers.
